Once again it's a mix of traditional and digital techniques, but this one definitely has more traditional work done to it. I did the original sketch with pencils, scanned it, cleaned it up, enlarged and printed it, and then colored that with colored pencils. After most of it was done, I scanned the picture again and cleaned up the coloring and added some hilights. Well, the end result is all that matters.
I wonder why I keep seeing sadness everywhere. No, not quite everywhere, but... almost. Hm. This picture is beautiful, the atmosphere is so calm and, in a way, hopeful. I can't find the proper words to describe it.. But somehow I just get sad when looking at it. It's odd. Like all the hope the picture contains suddenly turns into despair. You might understand what I'm trying to say if you've seen the movie United States of Leland, but if you haven't I'd better not try to explain. ':E One of these things I just can't put into words. Hm. But I like the colour scale anyway.
I haven't seen the movie. I probably should watch it some day. I don't know myself if this picture is sad, happy or simply just crazy. Things aren't that one-dimensional anyway. There's definitely supposed to be some light-hearted humor in the picture, but if you think about the situation from the point of view of the character, it's quite hopeless. In our eyes, he's nothing but a joke. He can't really be a ballerina, but he can do something. He can dream, and show his dream to the world in the form of a painting. That's probably pretty close to what I really wanted to say with this. In the form of a balding man wearing a tutu. Yes. I guess a picture doesn't have to be too serious to have some meaning.
If you put it that way, the picture begins to seem even tragicomical.
The shape of the chevalet is slightly off at the top part compared with the part below the painting. Not too badly, but still.
I agree with Efana about the athmosphere part. Great work.
Yep, I know about the chevalet. I could've fixed that digitally at the final phase, but decided to leave it as I had drawn it on paper. Thanks for the comment.
I agree about the sadness. There seems to be a strange sort of melancholy air, maybe of dashed hopes and dreams never to be realized.... He seems to love ballet very much, but is unable to dance gracefully himself.
A very strange but thought-provoking drawing. ^^ I like how pretty much all of your drawings seem quite strange and odd at first, but once you really look and think about them there are a myriad of meanings in them.
I don't quite understand how all of you seem to think about this picture in such a serious fashion, though of course I really appreciate this kind of feedback. So, once again, thanks for the comment. :3
Watching these kind of pictures make me wonder why am I not thinking about these kind of small insights that make so great concepts for images.
At the same time this image is sympathetic, sad and humorous. You begin to see different aspects and meanings as you take in all the details. Very nice.
Thanks for the comment! The ideas and insights just come sometimes, and, well, sometimes they don't come at all. On an occasion the smallest and most random sketch turns out to be one's best work yet.
