Just a short writeup of GGJ2011: I participated in the 48h game making event this weekend, and it was awesome. Such an explosion of creativity! Our team's game got nominated for best game of Finnish Game Jam 2011 too, go see our game's game jam page at globalgamejam.org/2011/rhythm-… and play the game at oletus.fi/static/rhythmofthest… or at Kongregate www.kongregate.com/games/pekuj… . I uploaded our promotional image to DA too: fav.me/d38gfrr

I also visited Depeche Mode Baar (www.depechemode.ee/bar/) in Tallinn a while back, definitely a place worth going to if you're ever at the neighborhood.

EDIT: Holy cow, we're also a Gamesauce Challenge Global Game Jam Winner! Gamesauce selected 10 out of the 1487 total games to be showcased at Casual Connect Europe, and we got the honor of being one of them. Finnish games owned the competition overall, with 4 winners. gamesauce.org/news/2011/02/02/…

Any Threadless people about? I just uploaded a design for critique in the design-your-own-clothes shop in hopes of perhaps getting something printed some day. So by all means, please go drop a comment or a vote on www.threadless.com/critique/81… if you're interested, that'd be a great help! Thanks.

I also made a blog post highlighting all the great new graphic design tools that have appeared during 2010, go see it at www.oletus.fi/content/tools-ch…

I've relocated my personal art gallery along with other personal information from Hectigo.net to my new, leaner site Oletus now. It's a bit bare-bones at the moment, but will be updated constantly during the summer, and has more room for expansion - stay tuned for new developments!
I finally added support for English comments and image names to my personal gallery at my home page hectigo.net, so it's more accessible for the international audience. I've still left my DeviantArt gallery intact too, and am continuing to publish things here - looks like things have actually taken a turn for the better around DA recently. Anyway, those of you who want to keep in touch with all of my latest work can also resort to the RSS feed besides devwatch. Over and out.
  • Playing: Which Way Is Up
I've been drawing too little lately, but at least I've been busy with other projects - Which Way Is Up, my newest game development project, has been progressing nicely, and I suggest you give it a try too. It's still far from finished, but has seven playable levels and a lot of room for expansion.
I guess everyone who's interested has already at least glimpsed at news.deviantart.com/article/26… , where realitysquared is trying to clarify the Terms of Service. The bad thing is, that when one looks into it, the news article doesn't seem to clarify anything at all.

The most obvious problem is: Clause 19, which is said to limit the use of the art we've uploaded, is in the Section II of the Terms, which only applies to users registered to deviantART. It also doesn't seem to be about the things the news post claims it to be about.

Now, I'm not a lawyer, and definitely not an American one, but as I see it, nothing in the terms explicitly disallows commercial use of work in deviantART by third parties. Why not? There does seem to be something wrong with the clause 16 that all the fuzz is about. Why not just fix it? I don't know how much different wording of the terms actually would affect the art thieves, even the organized ones, but I'd sleep more soundly if the admins at least tried to make the terms a bit tighter and more understandable for the rest of us.

The bad thing is, of course, that there aren't very good international alternatives for deviantART right now. There are plenty of things that I don't like about the site including this one (bad browser compatibility, advertising...), but I still won't probably be leaving the place any time soon. But if these problems don't start to be solved, I guess I'll have to start considering that. In the meanwhile, I'll probably upload most of my new work only to Harhakuva.org, which is a quite decent alternative to deviantART at least for the Finnish users. I'm also planning a technical overhaul of my personal website, which will include a new shiny image gallery too.
This is the list. I add stuff to the list when I feel like it.

1. I never set my alarm clock to go off at an exact hour (or at any other regular number of minutes). It might be unpractical sometimes, though I'm not completely sure of that.

2. While playing Guitar Hero on a friend's Playstation, I've written the nick of the game's owner on the high scores instead of my own without even realizing it. This has happened a couple of times on two different locations so far.

3.
I guess the site is already full of ramblings about V5, but I think I'll still throw in my thoughts.

The new layout is good. All of the most horrifying features of the old one are gone, though some of the pages (deviation submission, devwatch, updating the journal) still look and feel like they used to in the past. Navigation is a lot simpler, and the improved zoom function of the deviation pages works flawlessly. If you happen to use Firefox 1.5 or Internet Explorer 6, that is.

The site is almost unusable in Opera 9, and awful in Internet Explorer 7 (still in beta, though). To a huge site like this, good browser compatibility should be a very important issue. Now there are bugs all over the place. Seeing that only the most central parts of the site were changed, I simply can't understand why things are the way they are. I myself am quite happy with the update as I'm a Firefox user, but I'm sure a lot of people aren't.

The new categorization is also quite weird, if not outright bad. Some of the main categories are technique based, some of them are style based, and some of them are application based. I simply can't understand the logic of that. Why not separate categorization of style and technique altogether? The two really aren't that closely related. I bet it would make everything easier in the long run too. Converting all those old 24 000 000+ deviations to the new system would surely be somewhat of a programming task, but it shouldn't stand in the way of real progress.

In other news, I'd like to thank all the people on #digitalmedia for the series of competitions that were held during the birthday. Doing themed one-hour pictures was tons of fun, and I'm already looking forward to the next similar event. DMchat should have the complete results up quite soon.
Shinanai tagged me. Guh. The text on the journal told me to copy-paste the instructions here so I could ensure the further spreading of this thing. I think I'll disobey. Didn't I already do this? A very similar thingie, at least, though less strict. Anyway:

1. I own two hats that I haven't ever worn in public, and most probably never will. Only one of them is pink!

2. I have spent a non-trivial amount of money to CMX singles, though I don't really do anything with most of them. Well, a little bit of completely irrational spending once in a while is probably just healthy. I might get rid of some of them soon, though.

3. I still visit Homokaasu daily, but for completely different reasons than I did half a year ago.

4. I seriously think Sexy Commando would actually work as an martial art to some extent.

5. I like microfibre cleaning cloths. But, oh well, who wouldn't?

6. If 16 of my answers to the 49 questions were different, I'd probably be happier. Well, some of them already are.

7. When I start eating a micro pizza with a fork and a knife, I first cut a symmetrical shape at the center (usually a triangle), eat that, and continue from there. If I do the triangle, I'll usually continue by making a bigger triangle, then transforming it to a hexagon, and then eat what's left of the edges. It depends of the size and shape of the pizza, of course - the shapes might get more complex as the size of the pizza increases, and this basic technique is mostly applicable to just round-shaped pizzas.
I got tagged by Efana a couple of days ago.

1. Your name spelled backwards?
Ohauteillo. Not the best way to start a series of questions, really.

2. Who is your best friend of the opposite sex?
Shinanai.

3. The last thing you downloaded on to your computer?
The Muhammed cartoons that were published in Jyllands-Posten. I don't know if I really should have.

4. Have you ever licked a 9 volt battery?
No.

5. Last time you swam in a pool?
Probably in Päivölä, but I don't remember how long it has been since.

6. Have you ever been in a school play?
Yes, ages ago.

7. There is no question.
Isn't there? Where did question 9 go, by the way?

8. Type of music you dislike most?
There is shitty music in every genre. A typical answer, but there really aren't any others!

10. Do you have cable?
I don't have a TV. Wouldn't probably get one very soon even if I had the money.

11. Have you ever ridden on a moped?
Um, no, actually.

12. Ever made a prank phone call?
The subject is guilty for assistance to a prank phone call. I don't think I've ever really called any myself.

13. Boyfriend/girlfriend?
No.

14. Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving?
I'd like to say I would.

15. There is no question.
I feel like I really should write something completely hilarious now, shouldn't I?

16. Do you have a garden?
Every living thing I touch dies instantly. I live in the middle of concrete and steel.

17. What's your favorite comic strip?
Tuukka Virtaperko's comics. If they don't count, Calvin and Hobbes, of course.

18. Do you know all the words to the national anthem?
All the words I need.

19. Bath or shower, morning or night?
Shower in the morning, usually. Often, that means three PM.

20. Best movie you've seen in the last month?
Watched Memento for the second time yesterday.

21. Favorite pizza toppings?
Ananas, ham, pepperoni, a sufficient amount of cheese.

22. Chips or popcorn?
Taco chips are the only chips I don't refuse to eat. I guess that means popcorn, though I don't really like them either. Fresh corn is better.

23. What type of deoderant do you use?
Nothing special.

24. There is no question.
O rly?

25. Have you ever been in a beauty pagent?
Never.

26. Orange or apple juice?
Orange.

27. Who were the last people you went out to lunch with?
I went out to dinner with my family not so long ago, but, hm, last people I went out to lunch with? Can't remember.

28. Favorite type of chocolate bar?
I prefer to consume chocolate in larger amounts, so I don't really have a favorite. Tupla is good, but so are many other types.

30. Last time you ate a homegrown tomato?
I might've actually ate one once, but it's been so long that I really can't remember when it was.

31. Have you ever won a trophy?
They've mostly been diplomas.

32. If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be?
Esko. And not the one from the Finnish version of Garfield, the mere thought is revolting.

33. Ever punched someone in the face?
I try to avoid it.

34. Ever ordered from an infomercial?
Not even in my wildest nightmares.

35. Favorite video game?
I think my DA profile says DDR & Liero, though nowadays there seems to be a bit more competition. I don't really have a single favorite.

36. Have you ever had to wear a uniform to school/work?
No.

37. Last thing you bought at walgreens?
Never been there.

38. Ever thrown up in public?
I don't think so.

39. Would you prefer being a millionaire or finding true love?
Being a millionaire would probably rock for a while, but I think I still prefer this "true love" thingy, whatever it means.

40. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Hahahahahahahahaa... Yes.

41. Can ex's just be friends?
I believe the complexity of human relations can't be sufficiently explored in any simple answer to this question.

42. Who was the last person you visited in the hospital?
My father.

43. Did you have long hair as a kid?
Not particularly.

44. What message is on your voicemail machine?
You have really have some weird, unnecessary electronics there in America.

45. Where would you like to go right now?
As far away as possible. That would be insane, though, so I think I'll just stay where I am.

46. What was the name of your first pet?
I've never had any pets.

47. What kind of backpack do you have, & what's in it?
A yellowish gray "Piping Hot" pack, not that the brand really matters. It's empty.

48. Last incoming call on your phone?
What is this, an interrogation or something? Somebody called from home.

49. What is one thing you are grateful for today?
That aliens are most probably not going to eat my head.

50. What do you think about most?
The future, unfortunately.

I'm not going to tag anyone this time - last time my tagging was not answered, and I'd say there could be a better set of questions out there. Well, at least some of them were entertaining.
The real title: Just a thought that didn't seem to have come from my head

Waking up in the middle of the night, still halfway inside a nightmare can be really scary sometimes. I woke up at about two AM about a week ago, and was absolutely sure that there's a bat - the animal - in the bed next to me. It took me several seconds and considerably more heartbeats to convince myself that I had just imagined it. It was not quite as creepy as simiral experiences imagining hundreds of insects crawling all over me I've had since I was a child, or the more recent occurrences of dolls hovering in the middle of the air, but made me lose sleep for a while nevertheless. It's good that this kind of stuff doesn't happen very often. My deepest sympathies for the actual schitzophreniacs among us.
The new project, Patologi, can be found at patologi.hectigo.net, and will probably decrease my activity here in DeviantArt for an unspecified amount of time. I might submit some of the pages here, but then again I might not, and the English-speaking world wouldn't get much out of them anyway. The comic is and will be written in Finnish, and may contain any kind of material. The first page probably seems like very crude and bizarre gay porn for someone not understanding the text. As of yet there isn't any kind of plot or even recurring characters, and I don't know if there ever will be. The comic is not supposed to be particularly funny or even make any sense at all. Updates won't be submitted on regular intervals either - there is an RSS feed, though.

Just read it if you want to.
I would be yellow.

But I'm not. :(

Bananas Shave.
This thing is spreading like a plague. I almost thought I could avoid it, but oh well, here we are. Blame sakur.

People often aren't very interesting - it's the stuff they do that is interesting. I don't like being boring, so making this list was hard as hell. I hope you'll find it at least moderately entertaining.

1. Parkour seems like an interesting hobby, though I think I'll never take it very far. After trying jumping over a couple of railings and noticing how easy it is I have also gotten this irrational fear of moderately high bridges. I think that some day I'll just accidentially jump over some railing and die.

2. I've recently started singing excerpts from my favourite CMX songs in the shower. It feels a bit awkward.

3. I'm addicted to Gasgames. The amount of competitiveness I've found inside myself is overwhelming. My current ranking on the total high score table is 33.

4. I like the word "majordomo". It's perfect.

5. I love the Finnish language, and hate it when people rape it. Well, I hate raping things in general, but raping Finnish is the worst.

6. Chainsaw wielding pirates own ninjas big time.

7. I bought 26 1.5l bottles of Pepsi yesterday. 4 of them were Pepsi Max, the rest were regular.

8. I'm obsessed with having all my stuff in the right place, but I rarely use the vacuum cleaner.

9. Nothing is as entertaining as learning things. I think that I'm relatively good at it too.

10. I think I analyze my doings and sayings too much.

11. Maddox kicks ass.

12. I'd like to get to know the art of Kalervo Palsa better. He has drawn multiple penises.

13. My preferred method of dying would be drowning in a lake.

14. I associate a certain type of candy with playing StarCraft.

15. My favourite 4chan meme is "NO U", though everything cat-related gets pretty close too. I don't know why. I might just hate cats, actually.

16. I eat dead things. No cats though, because I hate them.

17. I should probably care about my clothing a bit more than I currently do. Appearance matters.

18. Technically I'm not allowed to disclose the origins of my most used onomatopoetic phrase very accurately.

19. I think I might've been born at the most interesting moment possible. Too bad I can't see the future, so I can't validate this statement. Then again, that's the very reason that makes being alive right now extremely exciting.

20. I left some things out of this list because I lack the balls to publish them. DeviantArt isn't a very encouraging place for publishing anything controversial either.

It's the time to spread the disease:

:iconnamminna:  :iconkazie:

You have been tagged.

This "20 things" thing might not ever end, by the way, considering the rate new people are born and joining DeviantArt. In the end, I kind of like the idea of this thing passing on from a generation to another. Like an endlessly multiplying virus. Mm-hm.

Probably it will run out of steam at some point, but anything is possible.
I've come a long way since I first landed here at DeviantArt. It's time to sum things up a bit, I guess. These statistics are completely subjective, and I take no responsibility for their accuracy. If you want to copy this idea and use it in your own journal, please do.

- I currently have 46 published deviations.
- 27 of them contain a man or parts of a man as one of the characters. Masculine monsters count too. In two of these pictures the character doesn't present any sexual characteristics at all.
- 18 of them contain a woman as one of the characters. I haven't cut any women to pieces, nor there are any feminine monsters.
- 10 of the pictures feature some sort of a border.
- 6 of the pictures feature some sort of an electric light.
- 5 of the pictures are completely monotone or black & white.
- 5 of the pictures contain some amount of blood. One of these pictures is humorous in nature. One of them is classified as horror.
- The sun is directly visible in 5 of the pictures.
- 4 of the characters in the pictures are somehow based on the features of some real person. One of these pictures is a photograph.
- 3 of the pictures feature some sort of a space ship or a plane.
- 3 of the pictures feature a couple. One of the couples is homosexual.
- 3 of the pictures feature a naked woman. One of them is classified as mature content. As of yet, there have been no naked men in my gallery.
- There's something burning in 3 of the pictures.
- 2 of the pictures are simple fanart - 3 of the pictures have some other kind of direct connection to the outside world.
- 2 of the pictures exceed the aspect ratio of 2:1 or 1:2. One of these pictures is 4200 pixels high and 300 pixels wide.
- It is winter in 2 of the pictures. In one of these pictures, it is Winter.
- 1 of the pictures contains lyrics of some song in the description. There are no quotations in any description.

It's been very warm here for the past week except for the occasional heavy rainstorms. It's quite nasty when I play DDR at the local arcade in Särkänniemi, because it gets awfully hot in there.

One day I'm going to do it.

I'm going to get a glass of water, sit in a chair, find a comfortable position, and then just sit there for a while. At some point I'll feel like I've sat still for too long, but I won't care - I'll just continue sitting. I'll make sure that there's nothing in front of me to distract me - a blank wall would be preferred. I'll just sit there, staring forward, concentrating on sitting. No sleeping, meditation or anything fancy like that - just plain old sitting. If I haven't stopped sitting or gone mad after a day or two, I'll consider the sitting a success.

That's my plan. Yep.

Or is it? "Is It a Cold or the Flu?" That is the question.

Locking a parrot in a room with a DVD player looping Weebl & Bob would probably produce interesting results.

"The disadvantages of distributing socks to different locations."

I've decided to discontinue publishing the Egyptian here at DeviantArt, and I'll remove published pages from my gallery. There are many reasons:

-The Egyptian really isn't the kind of art I'd like to publish here at DeviantArt, and it's filling my gallery. By the end of the summer there will be something like 25 pages - that's 25 deviations.
-Managing the whole comic here is not very effective. Doing usually automated stuff by hand is painful.
-The pages here don't generate almost any traffic on my website.

I'll probably publish a pack containing all the Egyptian pages after I've completed the comic, though. If I decide to continue drawing the Egyptian after the summer, I'll probably publish packs after completing each chapter.

The Egyptian will be only available at my website from now on.

Back on topic, I have pairless socks at both my old home in Valkeakoski and my new residence in Tampere. Those sneaky thingies, they really don't want to stay together. Why?

By the way, I cleaned up my favourites too - I don't want them to suffer inflation. I only removed some favourites from artists I have favourited multiple works of art, however.

I've been doing The Egyptian for four weeks now, and it has given me some interesting information about publishing something regularly. First of all, it takes a lot of time and energy - I have carried out some other projects, but most of my inspiration to draw goes to the Egyptian. I won't lose the ability to work on other kinds of art, however - or at least I hope so :P . I also hope that people won't start to think of me as the guy who makes the Egyptian, not as a more varied artist. This has been a problem for artists famous for one or two pieces of work for as long as art has existed, and is nowadays probably worse than ever. In the internet, impressions of people are made quickly.

If you're bored with the Egyptian, and even if you're not, you can check out the other stuff I've made for my website:

The Corporate Quiz

Browser Wars

The guitarist (scrap). I'll make a better version, when I have the time.

Then I have one secret project going on, that I unfortunately can't publish here yet. Sorry. I can tell you, however, that I will probably return to the world of 3D art quite soon (within a month or within a year :) ).

It's nice weather outside, we finally have a DDR machine here at Tampere and here I am, sitting at home at my computer. Catching a flu - especially during exam time - sucks. I don't really have the energy for studying, and it worries me. Nevertheless I have got several projects going on. The Egyptian webcomic started a while ago, and the third page is almost ready for publication on Monday. Be sure to check it out! I also have one major PhotoShop image going on, and a few unfinished articles waiting for the final touch.
